If you’re like me, you might be thinking, who can contemplate ‘happiness’ at a time like this? But contemplate happiness we must. It’s so easy to get sucked into the constant stream of negativity, and I mean constant! As a lawyer, It is very discouraging that the Senate would confirm a Supreme Court Justice who obfuscates, lies and doesn’t believe in cornerstone constitutional principles like due process. That’s without even getting into his sexual assault behavior and ill-advised personal habits.

I disagree with those who say that it’s not OK to feel angry. I regularly yell at the TV and shake my fists, among other things. Sometimes my anger comes out through my art. Allowing myself to feel angry creates the space within to feel joy and happiness.

Finding happiness inside ourselves is more critical than ever. I’ve been re-instating practices that have fallen by the wayside during my busy life, to bring the energy of Spirit through me:

  • expressing gratitude every time that I eat – to the farmers, sellers, preparers
  • reading something inspirational daily
  • meditating daily, breathing in whatever is challenging me in the moment, breathing out that which I want to replace it
  • Listening to chanting music
  • Celebrating what’s good – all of the time!
  • Spending time outside, connecting with the trees, rocks, animals (we have lizards at our office)
  • Being present with people whom I love
  • Finding ways to belly laugh
  • Volunteering with organizations and projects that I am passionate about
  • Investing money with companies that are making the world a better place
  • Giving money to organizations that are doing good in the world

One thing that makes me feel happy is have order: in my work and my personal life. We invite our clients to review their finances at least annually for their benefit, but also for mine. When I know what is going on in their lives, we can make financial adjustments when needed. Meeting with people face to face also humanizes my work and makes it more rewarding! I do this work to support my clients in living happy, fulfilled lives. Thank you for the privilege of working with you. May you be happy, may you be well.

I see posted concerns from men saying that they don’t know how to act because their behavior is under scrutiny. To that I say, for women and men alike, if you treat everyone with respect, your behavior will be appropriate and appreciated. As a feminist since age 16, it has always been about equality for all, not dominance by one sex over the other.
